Honouring Anne Hughes' Service to the Parish Council.

Published: 12 May 2026

As a Parish Council, we would like to express our sincere thanks to Anne Hughes – an absolute stalwart of the Council – who, on Monday night (11th May) stood down after 50 years of dedicated service.

Anne first joined the Parish Council in 1976, and during her time she has twice served as Chair, guiding the Council with energy, commitment and a deep love for the village. Anne has been instrumental in delivering many significant projects, including the housing at Millfields, the mutisports courts on Church Road, and the beacon at the War Memorial, to name just a few.

She has also been at the heart of countless village fetes, street parties, parades, exhibitions and raffles over the years. A great advocate for social housing in Layer and a remarkable source of local knowledge, Anne’s contribution to the Parish Council and the village has been extrordinary. We are hugely grateful and wish her a very happy ‘retirement’. There will be a tea party to thank Anne in the Village Hall on Saturday 30 May from 14:30 – All are invited.
